Plan

NBN 1000/100 through Neptune Internet, an independent Melbourne-based ISP.

Typical usage

Heavy household traffic, measured over a rolling 30 days:

Why this plan

Top residential NBN tier, so there’s plenty of headroom for the download and upload volumes above. Neptune is an independent ISP rather than one of the big retailers, which generally means better peering, more responsive support, and less aggressive traffic management.

Setup

Router and modem config TBD.

DNS

Neptune offers Atmosphere DNS, their ISP-level resolver. It’s currently disabled. It worked well in practice, but the call was that DNS belongs on my own network rather than at the ISP level. Resolution and any filtering are handled locally instead, which keeps control in-house rather than at the carrier.

Gotchas

The connection is asymmetric: upload is capped at 100 Mbps while download runs at 1000 Mbps. With ~1 TB uploaded per month, upstream bandwidth is the constraint to watch, not download. Peak-hour behaviour and peering notes TBD.
